Final exam


Use a blue book or your own paper.  Please be legible.
Remember: an 8 1/2 by 11 cheat sheet is allowed (notes on both sides OK), but not a Bible or any other texts.
Remember: you can skip ONE question and receive full credit IF you submitted one of the four alternative assignments by the deadline.





1)For each phrase from Matthew 18, talk for a paragraph on the 'historical world' significance of:

  • millstone
  • "gates of hell" 
  •  "on this rock"
  •  "binding and loosing
  • "little ones"

2)How would you deal with Mr. Squeaky Shoes if he went beyond just being annoying to killing a loved one of yours?  Talk about the process of forgiveness you would follow, and how you would deal with him wanting to return to your church upon his release from prison.  As part of your answer, discuss the Matthew 18 process, and comment on whether or not you would follow it, and why  (3/18)






3)From our study of Palm Sunday,  (3/28) What is the significance of:

  • the day Jesus rode into town
  • palm branches
  • the 2nd time Jesus cried





4)What is Jesus' primary message in one word?  
Say as much as you can about what he means by it.  (see Feb 13 post, and your book indexes, and search the word on class blog for lots of help)




5)Define Amish terms, and discuss each briefly (4/2):

6)From Amish Grace, Part 1, (Into through Chapter 5):
a)Summarize the basic story in a few paragraphs, assuming your reader knows nothing about the event (including who the Amish are).
b)Writing as if you were a member of your party, respond to the shooting and its aftermath. In particular, why do you agree or disagree with the way the Amish responded.


7)From Amish Grace Part 2 (chapters 6-9), summarize the content in as much detail as possible, so that I can tell you have read it well.  Also be sure to include comments on which biblical texts are key for the Amish, as well as what the Amish view of forgiveness is, and why you do or do not agree with it.  This should be your longest essay answer of the exam.


8)From Amish Grace Part 3:


a)Discuss the tie between church discipline and pardon  (Chapter 11)
b)What are the reasons for shunning?(Chapter 11)
c) How is Amish forgiveness misunderstood by American culture? (174-176)
d)Discuss the Amish views of technology, telephones, taxes and military service (Appendix)


9)After reading the  interview with the killer's mother (Amish Grace, pp, 191-199)
and the video interview with her we watched on , how do you respond?  Talk about whether or not you have compassion on the killer and can forgive him, and why/why not?


10)How do you feel. and how do you feel like reacting/responding to Westboro Baptist Church (The "God Hates Fags" Church) after watching the four video clips we showed.  What would you do if you met one of the church's leaders at Starbuck's and they were seated all alone with a sign on the table, "I would love to talk."   Mention the news clip about the church's view of the Amish school shooting, and also  include two other of the videos in  your answer, and compare/contrast your response to theirs.  (4/4 post)





11)From a   "three worlds"  reading (Note: both Scriptures  below will be projected on wall for exam)

a)From  Matthew 12:31-32, answer the question,
"What is the unpardonable sin" (or "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit")  in the context of that Scripture.
Use any skills you have learned in class, especially reading those verses in context (what comes before and after them),  Note: we did this in class  4/13 if you took notes

b)In Matthew 3:10-12 , is "baptism with fire" a positive or negative experience?    Explain how a study of the passage led to your conclusion. Find a chiasm in the Scripture, and note how that informs your answer,



12)a)Say as much as you can about the Feast of FirstFruits, especially as it may relate to Jesus' death  (4/11 post)


b))Say as much as you can about Feast of Passover/Passover Seder/Freast of Unleavened Bread, especially as it may relate to Jesus' death.  Comment on why the DaVinci seating arrangement is wrong. (4/11 post)


13) a)What is your view of the Trinity at the  Cross?  Include discussion of Psalm 22 and intertextuality.
b)Do you think God the Father temporarily abandined/.forsook Jesus on the Cross?
Was the fellowship of the Trinity broken?  Why or why not?  Why is your answer important? (4/11 post)

a)Summarize RRWI vs. EPIC culture (4/11 post and 4/19 post)
b)Which do you prefer, and why?
c) Which seems more like the biblical worldview, and why?
d)What are some of the postives and pitfalls of the church relating to culture
e)What is church?What is culture?  How would you advise the church to relate to culture? 
f)Summarize anything you learned about church and culture from 4/16 discussion (Matt. 28, videos, articles) and 4/19 "Gospel According to Starbucks".

16)Pick one:


a)Discuss as many of the six views if the atonement as you can.
Add one of your own (name it and describe it).
Which one of the  seven views  would you put in the center of the Venn diagram and why (If you had to pick one as the central/primary image)?  Help  4/4, 4/9, 4/11

b) How do you read the Bible on the role of the pastor? ( bottom section of 2/13 post and 4/16,  4/20, Kraybill book, class "church plant" assignment).  How often is term mentioned in the Bible (and what other passages would you turn to for help)  and what does the role seem to involve?  Compare with what you know about American churches from experience, others, or television/media.  If you were made a pastor tomorrow, what would be important for you to fulfilll your calling biblically?.

c)Choose a controversial contemporary issue (even if we have not discussed it in class--abortion, homosexuality/gay marriage, participation in military, drug use, immigration,   Christians should vote Republican, transgendered faculty at Christian schools, nonviolently responding to someone you catch stabbing or raping a loved one, etc etc.  Summarize your stand and feelings on the issue, Discuss how any class learnings, and scriptures from Matthew can speak to the issue.  (We modelled this in class 4/13).
